The White Hill. About the place

The Belogorsky St.-Nicolas orthodox missionary male monastery was found by the missionary father Stefan Lukashin in June 1890. It is situated in picturesque spurs of the Urals in 120 km from Perm and 85 km from Kungur.

Consecration of this place and the foundation of Krestovozdvizhensky cathedral on the White Hill took place on the 24th of June in 1902. The majestic church  had been built for 15 years in honour of exaltation of the God Cross. It is one of the most beautiful churches in Russia. (Ton, known by creating Moscow temple of Jesus Christ, is the architect of the church). The size of the cathedral contained 53,25 m in length, width and height; the capacity was computed for 5 thousands of prayers (in some variants more than 8 thousands).

At that time it was one of 3 biggest churches in Russia (only Temple of Jesus Christ in Moscow and  Isaakievsky cathedral in St.-Petersburg were bigger than it).
The formation of the cathedral was closely related with the history of the royal family of Romanovy. In 1914 Grand duchess Elizaveta Fedorovna, the elder sister of the last Russian Empress, visited the White Hill.
For 10 years the whole settlement of about 4 thousand people had appeared round the monastery. About 300 monks lived there. The monastery owned 580 dessiatinas of land, cattle, mill, 9 ponds and its own printing-house. 14 kinds of trade were organized in the monastery.
The years of Red Terror were full of terrible events. Superior father Varlaam and 36 monks were martyrized by Bolsheviks. They were not the last victims of that time. In 1918 after having been ruined the monastery was closed, and the church property was robbed. But the saint place didn’t become empty. Only in 1923 officials could finally close the monastery. Military State farm took all the buildings. Later the camp for victims of repression and special migrants; rehabilitation centre for wounded people, the house for disabled and club were situated here. By the end of 80th the domes of Chrestovozdvizhensky cathedral have been destroyed with fire. Only the walls remained from the whole temple.
In 1990 the monastery was given back to Orthodox church and the temple began being rised.
On the 13th of May in 1996 Alexy II, the Moscow patriarch, visited the Belogorsky monastery. He held the ceremonial service and called the Belogorsky monastery the chiev sacred place of Ural region.
